Your Handy Truck Maintenance Checklist

Ram Trucks

Trucks are built to go the distance, but there’s an essential truck maintenance checklist you need to follow. Truck repair can zero in on anything from transmission to stereo, but drivers should be mainly concerned with fluid changes and part checks, including the truck tires.

Truck Fluid Levels

If fluid levels fall too low, your truck can suffer anything from overheating to internal damage, so keep an eye on these levels.

  • Engine Oil: Lubricates and removes contaminants. It’s a good idea to change your oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. If a low-oil alert comes on between Watsonville and Scotts Valley, don’t ignore it.
  • Transmission Fluid: Keeps your gears running smoothly. Flush and replace every 25,000 miles.
  • Coolant: A truck runs warmer when it tows and hauls. Have the coolant fluid checked and changed regularly.

Truck Tires, Suspension, & Lights

A truck can tow across challenging terrain, so take care to check the following parts.

  • Truck Tires: Rotate them at least every 3,000 miles and check for signs of wear or damage on a regular basis.
  • Suspension: Bearing more weight and crossing rough terrain can wear out suspension components.
  • Lights: A dim light will be a liability in low-lit conditions and could indicate an underlying electrical problem.
  • Shock Absorbers: Be sure to check your shock absorbers 2-3 times a year to prevent tire damage or dangerous driving conditions.
